What is the Forest Impact Accelerator?
At its heart, the Forest Impact Accelerator functions as an incubator for early-stage, locally led Sustainable Finance Initiatives (SFIs). These initiatives encompass a diverse range of approaches, from community-owned enterprises and Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes to the establishment of trust funds and the development of high-integrity forest carbon projects. The overarching goal is to ensure that nature conservation and restoration efforts are not only impactful but also financially self-sustaining in the long term.
Participants in the Accelerator benefit from a comprehensive support package. This includes tailored technical assistance, crucial seed grants to kickstart projects, opportunities for peer learning and knowledge exchange with other conservation practitioners, and vital investor matchmaking to secure long-term funding. The current five-year program is ambitious, aiming to guide 23 SFIs through the development pipeline, with a target of 13 reaching full operational functionality. Collectively, these projects are set to protect one million hectares of Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs), directly benefiting over 200,000 individuals, with a specific focus on ensuring at least 30% of beneficiaries are women. The current cohort of the Forest Impact Accelerator comprises ten exemplary Partners, whose projects span critical tropical forest landscapes across Africa, Asia, and the Americas.
